The Wizard of Oz is a classic story that chronicles one young girl’s adventure to find her way back home again and being lost for so long. While this story focuses primarily on Dorothy and her cast of characters (which include the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion) many people find themselves rooting for the Wicked Witch of the West.
And why not? If any person represents the stereotypical image of a witch it is her. The pointed black hat, black dress and green skin simply scare the crap out of us every time she appears on screen.
Besides the fact that she commands an army of flying monkeys and rules supremely over her Winkie slave, we can all relate with the Wicked Witch, even if we only admit it to ourselves.
It is sometimes very easy to be consumed with something to the exclusion of everything else.
In this way she allowed Dorothy’s magical pair of shoes to become an idol that could not be ignored.
Ultimately this greed and compulsion lead to her downfall but before that the Wicked Witch surely was a force to be reckoned with.

The original Wizard of Oz was written by L. Frank Baum. Like many epic quest stories our heroes must complete a specific task before being granted either their freedom or the rewards they justly deserve. Although Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion are prominent in the first book, the real villain in Baum’s subsequent books is the Nome King.
